West Coast Golden
Opportunity - March 26th, 2007
In what turned out to be a daring Toronto air-raid on the
British Columbia Golden Gloves by Atlas Boxing Club, Coach
Armand Teodorescu took multiple time Ontario 64 Kg champion
Jonathan Bochner and Ontario 60 Kg silver medalist James Carpio
as the only Ontario boxers to attend the tournament.
The tournament was held in
Vancouver
,
BC
this past March 23rd and 24th at the River
Rock Casino and also featured teams from the home province,
Alberta
,
Quebec
, as well as a team from the US Olympic Training Center in
Michigan
.
Friday night saw both
Ontario
boys in action, James first up as the third bout, and Jonathan
tenth as one of the co-main events.
James faced off against Luke Davies of British Colombia,
the 13th fight of his career and the first against
somebody from outside of
Ontario
. The first two
rounds saw a few exchanges in which James made his power
obvious, but they were brief as both boxers failed to put their
punches together with any great success.
Davies proved to be a tough and determined competitor who
found himself outgunned as James began to warm up as well as
loosen up, and the exchanges became more heated and James began
to really rack up the computer points.
After the 3rd round it James was up by 15 pts,
and putting the pressure on now that he was in his groove, and
sure enough, halfway through the 4th and final round
James caught Luke with a vicious left hook that downed him.
Davies tried to get up, but fell to one knee as the
referee counted him out giving James the win in the semi-final
match.
Jonathan had elected to compete in this tournament in the
69 Kg category as it would be the more populated on at this
tournament. His
semi-final bout saw Jonathan lacing up against 2007 Canadian 69
Kg Champion Marc Bourassa of
Quebec
, who lost to Adam Trupish at the National FTS in St. Catherines
to claim the National B Team spot.
Jonathan entered the fight knowing a bit about his
opponent and on how to fight him, so he started off very cool
and composed, determined to pick Marc apart.
By the 2nd round the action started to heat up
as Jonathan applied his unusually high dose of pressure,
dominating the exchanges. By
halfway through the 3rd round Jonathan had racked up
enough points to hear the whistle blown signifying a win by
outclass. Jonathan
breezed his way to finals with a dominating performance against
the #2 boxer in
Canada
at the 69 Kg category.
Saturday was much more relaxed as everyone had a chance
for a good night’s rest and everybody was ready to make some
noise in their finals matches.
James was slated to fight Eric De Guzman of
Alberta
, a veteran fighter of many bouts who owns and operates a club
of his own. Having
seen James’ fight the night before De Guzman knew better than
to try to engage with James, so much of the fight saw him
feinting and dodging out of the way of James’ punches.
Although James did land some very convincing shots, he
wasn’t able to connect nearly enough to gather more points
than Eric, who had been pelting James with quick counter punches
that threw off James rhythm and had him behind on points by
quite a bit. And
that was how the fight ended, with Eric De Guzman
the winner on points, and James earning a silver medal at
the Golden Gloves, his first multi-provincial tournament.
Jonathan again was slated to fight near the end of the
evening and this time destined to square off against long time
BC champion in both the 64 and 69 Kg categories, Nathan
Kulczycki of
Vancouver
, who had never before lost a bout in the province in British
Colombia. Both had
fought each other before and knew what to expect from one
another, so the action started off right from the first bell.
Jonathan put his punches together during what would be a
four round war between two very determined and very experienced
fighters. As before,
Jonathan’s relentless attack began to give him the edge on
points, an edge that Jonathan never gave up, despite the best
efforts of Nathan to pull ahead.
Both fighters fought their hearts out as they put on an
excellent display of boxing for the crowd of 1000 plus in
attendance. After
four rounds of spectacular action, Jonathan had his hand raised,
winning the fight on points to be the 69 Kg Golden Gloves
champion for 2007. Having
fought two such very distinguished opponents to claim victory
the judges and organizers of the tournament saw fit to bestow
upon Jonathan the highest honor of the tournament, the Golden
Boy best boxer belt, which Jonathan now proudly adds to his list
of great accomplishments. |
